About us

What are Greenways?

Greenways are transportation corridors where walking and bicycling are the primary modes of travel and driving is the alternative form.

Greenways enable people to ride bicycles or walk to destinations without having to share the busier streets with automobiles. This contributes to the City of Kirkland’s vision for a multi-modal transportation network, designed to give residents more options for how they get around the city.

And while Kirkland Greenways is dedicated to promoting Greenways as a critical element of safe streets for everyone, we also recognize streets make up nearly 80% of public space. Not every street will become a Greenway.

We still need our streets to be safe for those times when we want or need to walk, bike, bus, and use other forms of active transportation.

We believe our streets should provide an effective transportation system with access for people of all ages and abilities.

That’s why we advocate for ways to connect our homes with work, school, shopping, recreation, entertainment, and other destinations through safe, economical, equitable, accessible, and environmentally sound modes of transportation.

Streets designed for people-first have the potential to foster business activity and vitality throughout Kirkland’s many splendid neighborhoods.

Who are we?

We’ve been identifying, advocating for, and activating safe healthy streets since 2012.  We are part of a growing movement or people who want safer streets for their kids, for their families, for their community — and we’ve joined the coalition of over 20 community groups in Seattle that are already making positive changes in their neighborhoods.

Here’s a great example of how our advocacy led to Kirkland’s first official Greenway.

We also contributed to the creation of the Cross Kirkland Corridor and continue to find ways to transform this critical connection to the larger Eastrail plan and the city’s Master Plan
